FAQ - What is the difference between an expense and a payment?

An expense records something the group bought and determines who paid and who should share its cost. Examples include a hotel, groceries, or a restaurant bill.

A payment records money sent directly from one person to another to reduce their open balances. Payments do not create a new shared expense.
